Opinion on Filters from Will Richardson

Oct 01, 2008 in EdTech News

The following came from Weblogg-ed, Will Richardson’s blog.  Richardson is the author of Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and other Power Web Tools for the Classroom.

I say this all the time, but I truly believe that filters make our kids less safe. They step off the bus into unfiltered worlds with no context for making good decisions about the stuff coming at them. It’s a huge problem. But on some levels, the bigger problem is what we are doing to our teachers. It insults the profession to not at the very least provide desktop overrides for teachers when they bump up against a filtered site. Have a policy in place to deal with incidents where teachers make poor choices if that’s what the concern is.

Seriously, am I missing something? Why is that so hard to implement?

The only way we’re going to get students, or teachers, to master the Web is to let them use it.

Progress Reports

Sep 20, 2008 in PowerSchool

As a number of our schools prepare for progress reports, I thought I would share some PowerTeacher Gradebook resources with teachers.

The following link is to a PDF that demonstrates how to add comments and manually override grades:

Here as a link to a PDF that demonstrates how to change citizenship scores using PowerTeacher:

Below is a video on the same topic (changing citizenship scores):

Printing absence reports from PowerTeacher is demonstrated in the following video:

There are more tutorials available at the San Luis Coastal EdTech Website at http://slcedtech.net/ . Click PowerSchool for the tutorials on using the gradebook.

I did notice that our Internet connection was a little slow yesterday.  If the situation hasn’t improved, it may take a minute or so before the online videos begin to stream.  The progress bar only needs to make it to the 10% mark before the video begins to play.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any help getting ready for progress reports.

Please note that each school has a different due date for progress reports.  If you need information about your school’s progress report due date, please contact your school’s administration; however, do not hesitate to contact me if you need any other type of assistance.

Note:  The current term for LOMS and LAMS is Q1.

Dropped Students on Active List

Sep 20, 2008 in PowerSchool

A number of teachers have reported that students who were dropped their classes and no longer appear on the PowerSchool attendance list are still listed as active students within the PowerTeacher Gradebook.

The PT Gradebook does enable teachers to view either “Active,” “All,” or “Dropped” students in their classes.  Selecting the “All” option will show students who were dropped right along side those who are still enrolled in the class.

For most teachers, dropped students do NOT appear on their active lists in PT Gradebook.  However, we do have teachers who have dropped students who still appear on the active gradebook lists.

Information Services and Technology has contacted PowerSchool about this issue, and hopefully it will be resolved soon.

Dropped Students in PowerTeacher

Sep 18, 2008 in EdTech News

A lot of teachers ask how to deal with obtaining scores from a student who was dropped from their class.  A number of teachers have come to the conclusion that the records of a dropped student are lost.  This is absolutely not true.  Here is a video tutorial on getting how to get assignment scores and/or print reports for dropped students:

PowerTeacher & Spelling

Sep 17, 2008 in PowerSchool

Our district considers the subject of spelling to be a subtopic under the broader category of writing.  Many of our teachers, however, treat spelling as its own unique topic.

We can and have created new topics for teachers on our PowerSchool information system.  For spelling, I recommend changing the name of your Room to Spelling and using that as your topic.

The following video tutorial shows you how to change the name of a topic:

Important PowerTeacher Assignment Info

Aug 27, 2008 in PowerSchool

When entering assignments in the Web-based gradebook, make sure that abbreviated assignment names are less than fifteen characters in length. Teachers exceeding that limit will receive a vague system error message.

The name of the assignment can be much longer; the fifteen character limit only applies to the abbreviated version of that assignment name.

We’ve asked PowerSchool to update the gradebook so that abbreviated assignment names are automatically truncated.

Please visit the San Luis Coastal EdTech Site for more information about PowerSchool and the PowerTeacher Gradebook.
