Thank you to all of you who’ve invested your valuable time learning to use Moodle. I sincerely hope you find it to be a useful teaching tool.

Please know that I am happy to come to your class to get your students logged in to Moodle and give them an overall tour of the program. Simply send me an e-mail with some potential days and times if you’d like me to work with your class.

I’ve added a couple of new Moodle tutorial videos to our San Luis Coastal EdTech site.

The first is a video tutorial on how to add a Discovery/United Streaming video directly to your Moodle class:

http://www.slcedtech.net/discoverystreaming/discoverystreaming.html

The second video demonstrates how to create your own Moodle quiz questions:

http://www.slcedtech.net/moodle.htm

All thirteen Moodle video tutorials can be accessed here:

http://www.slcedtech.net/moodle.htm

We also have some new Moodle quizzes available for download. Please feel free to send me quizzes that you’d like to see “Moodlized.” A list of current quizzes is available here:

http://www.slcedtech.net/e3/moodlequizzes.html

An optional advanced Moodle class has been tentatively scheduled for Monday, June 16th from 12:30 to 3:30 P.M. Teachers attending this class will walk away with several Moodle quizzes and the ability to write more on their own. The location has not been set, and more information about this class will be available shortly.

Next year, teachers will be learning the PowerTeacher gradebook, PhotoStory, and student response pads. We will be offering PowerTeacher gradebook and PhotoStory classes in August for those interested in getting an early start on the E3 professional development.

Two of the PowerTeacher gradebook classes have been confirmed. Both take place on Monday, August 11th. The first class runs from 8:30 to 11:30; this same class will then be repeated from 12:30 to 3:30. The location has not been confirmed, and more information will be available shortly. Taking classes in August is NOT required.

Professional development scheduling for the second year of our Engage, Explore, Express program will be the main topic at our next Lead E3 committee meeting. This meeting takes place on Thursday, May 29th from 3:30 to 4:30 at the Bishop’s Peak library. Everyone is welcome to participate on the Lead E3 Committee. Teachers will be paid at the teacher hourly rate; library techs will be paid either hourly or overtime depending on their schedules.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like some assistance in integrating educational technology into your instruction.

Reminder: Online registration for our Bright Lights/Powerful Teaching workshop is now open. This workshop, along with the Moodle class, is part of our overall Engage, Explore, Express (E3) professional development program and is required for participating E3 teachers. The link to the registration page is here:http://www.slcedtech.net/e3

The available dates for this one-day class are Friday, April 18; Wednesday, May 21; and Wednesday, June 18. The class will take place from 8:30 to 2:45 in H-4 at the District Office. Please contact Eric Jarvis if none of these dates will work for you.

Burt Lo, consultant for CUEtoYOU, is the scheduled presenter.

We are still offering Moodle classes, and we are planning on adding an additional one-day session during the school year. If there’s interest, we’ll add a one-day Moodle session at the conclusion of the school year in June. So far, we’ve scheduled eight offerings of our Moodle class, but we are willing to do whatever it takes to accommodate your needs. Use the link listed above to find the Moodle schedule and online registration form.

Classroom computers have begun arriving at BA, HA, and PA, and the technicians from Information Services and Technology have been busy getting them installed. These computers actually arrived about two weeks ahead of schedule. This, unfortunately, caught me and some of our schools off guard. We will try to get more accurate ETAs on our upcoming shipments.

Thank you for attending our mandatory professional development sessions. We will be submitting a report to the state next week on our E3 program progress. They are requiring that we document all professional development sessions, the attendance at those sessions, our observation baseline data, and more. They will be reviewing this document prior to sending our district the second of four funding installments.

Thanks to all of you, it looks like we will be in good standing with the State and will receive this second installment of funds.

We want you to know how much we appreciate your efforts in making this grant work. You all work EXTREMELY hard, and attending additional classes after teaching all day or preparing for a substitute can be grueling. Please let us know if there’s ANYTHING we can do to assist you in fulfilling the State’s ambitious professional development requirements.

For the 2008-2009 school year, we will be conducting classes on creating multimedia projects with students, using student response pads, and the brand new Power-Teacher Web-based gradebook. The new gradebook is NOT the dreaded PowerGrade that we’re sure you’ve heard stories about. This grade book is user friendly, can be accessed just about anywhere, and works alternately on a Mac AND a PC (see,Mac and PC CAN be friends!). Using this grade book and the parent portal will not be mandatory during the 2008-2009 school year; we are asking, however, that you take a class on the system and try it out.

Please feel free to contact Eric Jarvis in Instructional Services if you have any questions regarding the EETT program, “Engage, Explore, Express” (E3).
