I’m VERY disappointed to report that students and teachers may no longer register their Black Gold library cards on the ETC Portal.

Instead, users must type in their fourteen-digit code each time they visit the Black-Gold Website, making it unlikely that the services provided will ever be widely used by our County students.

I’m hoping that, for the good of our community, Black Gold and SLOCOE are able to resume a mutually beneficial relationship in the near future.

Below is the notification that SLOCOE sent out regarding this situation.

ETC Consortium Members – At the request of representatives from the Black Gold Cooperative Library System, San Luis Obispo City-County Library, and Paso Robles City Library, we have removed from the ETC Portal all direct links to library databases and the ability for users to store their library card numbers. In their place, we have added basic links to the websites of those three libraries. We have also posted an announcement on the front of the ETC Portal notifying users of this change.

This action is a result of the Libraries’ concerns about their patrons accessing Public Library resources via the ETC Portal, as discussed at last weeks’ ETC Consortium meeting.

Teachers may now “unenroll” multiple students at once. They may also reset their courses, and students no longer receive a file-not-found message when they first enroll in a class.

We are still encountering some errors when importing class date from one course to another, and the Aiken test format still does not import correctly. SLOCOE hopes to have those two issues resolved soon.

The San Luis Obispo County Office of Education has updated to the most recent version of Moodle. Users should NOT notice any significant differences in the basic operation of their Moodle site. There are, however, a number of improvements.

One of the more significant changes is the addition of Drag Math to the html editor. Drag Math works similarly as Microsoft Equation Editor in that it allows you to insert advanced mathematical formulas.

Another improvement is the ability to go immediately back to your Moodle site after adding a resource. After adding a Web link to Moodle, the previous version sent the user on the the Website. The user now may choose to go back to their own Moodle site after adding the Web link.

There are other improvements that will be addressed in upcoming entries.

Our local public library offers the Thomson-Gale data bases, World Book Online, and a host of other online resources on their Black Gold Website. The library requires patrons to type in their fourteen-digit library card number each time they access this site.

The San Luis Obispo County Office of Education is offering a Black Gold section on the ETC Portal where Portal users only need to type in their library card number, along with their last name, one time before. After entering this information, the user will then be passed through to the Black and Gold Website without ever having to enter their (rather long) library card number.

The County is now working on a plan to obtain library card number for all SLO County students. The idea would then be to associate each student’s library card number with their ETC Portal account information so that they could access all of the Black and Gold Public Library resources via the ETC Portal without ever having to type in their card number.
